Charmed Life
Having written about the infamous institution of Yankee Swaps back in December, I thought I’d check back in to report on my experiences at this year’s swap held by the Baltimore Improv Group. It was held late in January, giving everyone plenty of time to recover from the holidays and get into fine swap form.
A partial list of the gifts offered up for the taking:
—a package of bacon flavored microwave popcorn
—a paperback of Kubler-Ross’ seminal work, “On Death and Dying”
—a “Big Boyz Bail Bonds” t-shirt
—a golden angel statuette
—a dart game
—a videotape of the movie “Grease II”
—a container of rainbow jello
—a paper mache dinosaur
—a solar-powered cell phone charger
—a pink flamingo
—a Halloween bride and groom (a set of skeletons whose jaws hang open while music plays)
—a beanie baby puppy
—a remote-controlled helicopter
—a book titled “Major in Success”
Can you guess which one became the “it” gift?
You got it, the remote-controlled helicopter, which, I’m proud to report, was provided by our family. It got stolen until it hit the 3-steal limit, at which time a certain mother in attendance begged the lucky helicopter holder to just give it to her out of the goodness of her heart, and got her wish. Ah, charity.
We walked away with the pink flamingo and the beanie baby puppy, who have joined the iguana and elephant from previous years’ Yankee Swaps as objects of, if not pleasure, then at least curiosity, at our house. We also got the bacon-flavored popcorn, and one day soon we’ll break it out.
