Public schools. Keep those two words in mind. A week ago Monday, hundreds of concerned members of the Orthodox community gathered at Congregation Shomrei Emunah to hear words of spirituality, prayer and practical suggestions on dealing with this incredibly stressed economy. There is a particular nuance they share that makes the frum community perhaps more unique than other denominations of Judaism. That nuance is that pretty much every Orthodox Jewish child attends or will attend a Jewish school. If you do the easy math, and let’s just talk about a family with perhaps three children, we’re looking at anywhere from $30,000 to $45,000 in annual tuition fees. You’ve got three children in school—crunch the numbers. You’ve got four or more children in school, the numbers are crunching you. Rabbi Yissocher Frand, the evening’s keynote speaker, spoke brilliantly with clarity… read more

Phil, I do believe you’re absolutely correct on many points here, BUT…(you knew that was coming). I send my kids to TA and REALLY struggle and go into tremendous debt to pay tuition. The “norm” in this city is to send their kids to day school. If I break free and decide to adopt your chetzi-chetzi model with public school and EVEN if I got another 40 families to do it with me, my kids will still be the outcasts and will never have the social aspect that the “Regular” TA kids will have. They will be known as thye “public school” kids because this communities mentality is bass ackwards. Another point, the sponsorships of other tuitions and having monies coming in from other members of the community is flawed. Do you really believe that if TA or any other school had another, say, $250,000 coming in, that wouldn’t go straight to the salaries of the upper echelons of the executive committee. By the way, how come we have no idea how the schools are operating fiscally and budgeting in this economic climate. How many high 6 figure salaries are out there on the backs of struggling parents who can barely make ends meet? I personally know someone that asked too many questions and was politely asked to stop asking or their child will be asked to leave the school. What happened to transparency? I remember when I was in TA in the late 80’s or early 90’s, out of nowhere, they put up a for sale sign on the front lawn because things got so bad. So as parents and community members we need to ask these daunting questions of the school to get some real answers instead of just waiting and seeing what they do next. Maybe tuition will go up another 15% next year without and explanation.
