This Saturday night at 8 at the Park Heights Jewish Community Center, Jewish Theatre Workshop of Baltimore is going to offer something worth your comment.
It’s going to be the reading of “A Modest Suggestion,” a play written by Ken Kaissar.
So, what would it be like if four businessmen were having a routine office meeting, eating donuts, when the supervisor starts the meeting’s agenda with the words, “Should we, or should we not kill the Jews?”
Office politics play come into play with the three more junior colleagues working to get the inside track on the boss’s good side bringing everyone into agreement that finding and killing a Jew somehow made sense.
The play, directed by Etan Weintraub, is a reading. There will be a discussion afterwards.
I play the supervisor in this production.
And I can’t help but think after many rehearsals that at some time, somewhere within the hallways of Nazi Germany, these meetings actually took place.
“A Modest Suggestion” has, believe it or not, some very funny spots to it. If you are an office worker and meetings are part of your day, you will see yourself in this play. You’ll know the other characters, because you’ve interacted with them before.
Now, of course, the interaction has been over strategic planning or fiscal issues, not over killing a Jew.
The play has also been turned into a movie, directed by Arnon Shorr and produced by Israel Orange and Mark Jaffee and Mr. Shorr. The film is sure to turn heads in international, national and local theatres.
The play has been described as a “dark comedy.”
But I can tell you as one of the readers for this Saturday night, I’m more haunted by all of this I can accurately describe.
Can’t wait to hear what you have to say.
