The Moroccan people went to vote today on a historic constitutional referendum to limit the power of their longstanding (and highly respected) king and give more power to parliament. Three of the largest political parties are backing it while one that is not simply says it does not go far it. But the real story here is that the Arab world is undeniably more democratic today than it was one year ago – and largely without the help of the United States or the Europeans. Rather, the people – due largely to the combination of aging leaders, technological leaps and sharp leaders on the ground – are speaking up for their inherent rights.
