Comments (3)While everyone in the world is chiming in on what was in and out of President Barack Obama’s speech in Cairo yesterday, I wonder why no one is taking his travel agent to task. That is, how can it be that after such a major initiative – in which the section on the pressuring Israel on settlements gained some of the largest applause – the president didn’t then go to Israel where he could directly take the case to Israelis and Palestinians? After all, President Bill Clinton was wildly popular in Israel (meaning he could push Israeli prime ministers a little more) because he went directly to the Israeli people in talking about the need for sacrifice. He can engage all he wants, but he needs to stop his blatant interference in another country’s affairs. As far as I know, Israeli’s democratically elected a government for Israeli’s. We are not the 51st state of America.

Neil, I agree with you about the importance of deep engagement with the people, and with the Jewish people. He has been doing that consistently in America. In israel that is much more complicated without being seen as interfering. The right is extreme now that everything he does will be considered evil, as long as he wants the settlements to stop, no?
Also, this trip was an Arab Muslim trip, going to Israel afterward would have been perceived as proceeding on to get approval from Israel. that is not what you intended but what would be perceived. But, yes, finally, let us press him to engage Israeli Jews more. It is vital and a good idea.
