On the weekend of October 24 and 25, people the world over will be thinking 350. That is the number of carbon dioxide parts per million in the atmosphere at which contemporary life flourishes, at which humanity and our nourishing world thrive. The world is now hovering around 390 parts per million, and moving up, way out of kilter with the norm and threatening the stability of the climate and the natural cycles as we know them.  So on the last weekend of October, individuals, communities, schools, and congregations the world over will mark the significance of 350 ppm, with an array of programs, reminding us that we need to roll back the amount of carbon dioxide we put into the air, and to do that, we need to change the ways we do things.  That weekend also happens… read more

So, ... with all due respect (and I don’t just say that, I mean “with all due respect ”) the 350PPM issue needs to be looked at scientifically, and not emotionally.  Here is the math, as described by Lord Christopher Monckton who served as an advisor to Margaret Thatcher and is an expert on climate change:

•  Worldwide, we emit 30 billion tons of CO2 into the atmosphere per year.
•  This accounts for 2 Parts per million (2PPM) of the CO2 in the atmosphere.
•  This equates to 15 billion tons per part per million (30 billion divided by 2PPM)
•  The UN says at our current rate, we will increase the count by 468PPM in the next century.  This is almost impossible, as the math that follows will show.
•  This means we would have to precipitate an increase from our current 30 billion tons to 7 trillion tons per year (468PPM x 15 billion tons)
•  The UN says these 7 trillion tons would cause a 7-degree (Fahrenheit) increase, or 1 degree per trillion tons.
•  However, if you divide 1 trillion tons by our current rate of emissions (30 billion tons per year), that would mean we would have to shut off all cars, trains, planes, boats, smokestacks, all industry IN THE WORLD for 33 years to make 1 degree’s worth of climate change.
•  If you’ve followed all of this, it means there is almost nothing we can do to affect the climate, either negatively or positively.  In actuality, our “contribution” to the CO2 in the atmosphere doesn’t move the needle.

Now, please know that I am a staunch supporter of a clean environment and believe that pollution control (which is a different problem than CO2 emissions) is something to be ever-vigilant about.  However man-caused global warming doesn’t exist.  Further, there is a body of scientific evidence that shows that CO2 content in the atmosphere goes up as climate goes up - not the other way around, ... meaning that CO2 isn’t the cause for climate increases, it is the result!
