Today we’ll continue our discussion of hypogonadism. This is also known as low testosterone in men and is associated with a whole series of symptoms which define what is now called andropause in middle to older aged men. To recap, low sexual desire (low libido), weaker and fewer erections, reduced sexual activity, low energy or fatigue, depressed mood or poor concentration, reduced muscle mass and even testicular discomfort are all common findings in men with hypogonadism. The evaluation typically is completed by blood work looking at the patients hormonal profile. Common causes or associated medical conditions include chronic opioid use, obesity, diabetes, AIDs, hypertension and hyperlipidemia. Once the diagnosis is made and a prolactin secreting tumor is excluded, treatment can be instituted.
