Way back in the mid-‘90s, my wife and I thought we should get back in touch with our roots and finally learn Yiddish. After all, my in-laws speak the language fluently, and my parents certainly understood it well and could converse. So we figured that before we had kids, we’d better learn Yiddish (so we could speak in a code our children could not break, much like the Navajos with the Japanese during World War II). Ah, the best laid schemes of mice and men. We took a once-a-week evening class at Baltimore Hebrew University with the late Dr. Solomon Manischewitz. many truths in this piece, but actually, the language which we spoke for millenia despite our exile was hebrew.  what makes yiddish “batamte”  is its “ta’am”; the jew who was an “okshen” for preserving his ancestors’ religious tradition was at heart an “akshan” (stubborn).  otherwise, yiddish would have remained pretty close to the low german dialect it is based on, and not the flavourful “lashon” (tongue) spoken these last few hundred years.
